Welcome to the world of flash photography! This topic can usually send shivers down photographers spines, but guess what? It doesn’t have to. As you get started on your creative journey, two key concepts come into play: TTL (Through-The-Lens) flash and manual flash. These techniques open up a world of possibilities, allowing you to control your lighting to be exactly what you want. We’ll explore the differences between TTL and manual flash, while uncovering their features, advantages, and when to embrace each option!

Imagine having a lighting assistant right inside your camera! That’s the beauty of TTL flash, a technology that seamlessly integrates your camera’s metering system with a compatible flash unit. It’s like having your camera and flash engage in a creative dance, resulting in near-precisely exposed images with minimal effort.
TTL flash becomes your trusty companion in situations where time is of the essence. Let it take care of exposure while you focus on capturing those remarkable moments with ease.
The cons of TTL?
At the end of the day – you’re trusting technology to call the shots instead of you. The more expensive your flash is, the higher the technology, and the better chances of TTL getting it right. But, technology can only do so much.
This is why we recommend TTL when first getting started, but recommend moving to manual as quickly as possible! Think of TTL like shooting in aperture priority – it works, but it’s not the best case scenario.
Are you ready to take full control of your lighting? Manual flash empowers you to have full control of your own photography! By manually adjusting the flash output power, you can shape the light exactly as you envision it, bringing your artistic ideas to life.
Picture a controlled environment, where lighting conditions remain constant or when you desire specific, finely tuned lighting effects. Studio photography, portraits, and product shots are just a few scenarios where manual flash shines, giving you full command over the illumination. The more you practice, the easier manual flash will become! Soon you’ll be shooting it in quick moving situations – practice makes perfect.
