When asking creative entrepreneurs about their branding, their mindsets almost immediately go to aesthetics. But a brand is so much more. A brand is YOU. It’s what people think of when they think of you. It’s the emotion + inspiration they find in your business. It’s how you’re going to change their life.. For example. A while back I shared a poll- why do you follow me? Some of the responses were:
“Inspiration and encouragement- to build a business and art that fuels a happy life.”
“I unfollowed almost every photographer because I was comparing myself to them but kept following you because your style inspires me to be my own person in this industry.”
And this is what my brand is – empowerment, individualism, growth, and FUN. So what is yours?
An important exercise: Think about what’s your favorite thing about yourself? Ask your friends and family their favorite things about you. We have to get crystal clear on what it is you stand for. THAT is your foundation, your North Star, expounding on that is what is going to kick your competition to the curb.
Because your brand is YOU. It’s not an aesthetic, logo, or font. It’s how you make your audience feel. You are the foundation of your brand and that should bleed into every other aspect of your business.
For a long time I didn’t try to be myself, I tried to be like other people. My brand was mediocre, and so my business was, too. You may think that the things that make you weird or different are things to be nervous about, but in reality those are your superpowers. Those things are what separate you from the competition.
